Colposcopy
Specialized procedure that allows for closer examination of the cervix, helping to identify and evaluate any abnormal cervical cells.
Overview
Legacy OB/GYN offers colposcopy as a diagnostic procedure. A colposcope is an instrument that shines a light onto your vagina and cervix and magnifies the view, allowing physicians to examine tissues not visible to the naked eye. The procedure is typically recommended following abnormal Pap smear results to evaluate the cervix, vagina, and vulva for disease signs, including precancerous changes and cervical cancer.
What to Expect
- Pre-Procedure: Avoid intercourse, vaginal medications, douching, and tampons for 24 hours prior. Schedule when not menstruating for best results.
- Patient reclines with feet in stirrups, similar to a pelvic exam
- A speculum spreads vaginal walls for visualization
- A mild solution is applied to highlight abnormal areas
- If necessary, a tissue biopsy is taken for laboratory analysis
- Without biopsy: Resume normal activities immediately with possible light spotting
- With biopsy: Vaginal soreness and dark discharge may persist several days; use sanitary pads (not tampons) until discharge stops
